Topic: ELECTRONICS WASTE MANAGEMENT, PROBLEMS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Ref.Code: UPW-SM-651a79aa88Institution: FUTO

Safe management of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) is becoming a major problem in many countries around the world. In particular, developing countries like Nigeria face a number of issues with the generation, trans-boundary movement and management of e-waste. It is estimated that the world generates around 20-50 million tonnes of e-waste annually, most of it from Asian countries. Improper handling of e-waste can cause harm to the environment and human health due to its toxic components and also put confidential information in the hands of criminals who crave for them. The current emphasis is on end-of-life management of e-waste activities such as reuse, servicing, repair, remanufacturing, recycling and disposal. In developing countries proper management of e-waste is absent or very limited. But proper management of e-waste can create employment opportunities, serene environment as well as revenue to the government.
